So you have setup Plex Media server, added your movies and music and are streaming your content to multiple devices. You are now looking to customize your Plex solution and make it your own. With digital media it takes no time at all to get to the point where you have hundreds if not thousands of files and want to organize your content into a more usable format. Using the Plex playlist editor functionality you can arrange your digital media into different groups to be used for different moods or activities. You can create a playlist for relaxation or for walking the dog. In this post we will look at how to make a playlist on Plex and how to add music and video files. We will also show you the Plex playlist location and how to launch them on any device.

How to Make a Playlist on Plex – Plex Playlist Location

Creating playlists on Plex is very simple and they can be easily managed from the Plex playlist editor screen. Playlists do not need to be created on every device that you stream to. Simply create your playlist on your Plex Media Server and it will be available for use on all of your client devices. Plex playlists can be used for both music and video. Select Files for your Plex Playlist

In the first part of our “How to Make a Playlist on Plex” guide we look at how to select the files that you want to include. To do this open up a web browser on your Plex Media Server and navigate to your Plex server management page. This is usually done using the following url:

http://127.0.0.1:32400/web/index.html

Next select Music from the left hand menu. This should show all of the albums available on your Plex server on the right hand side. With Plex you can either add an entire album or individual tracks to a playlist. If you want to add a full album and make a rather large playlist hover over the album you want to add until the circle appears at the top left of it. If you want to add individual songs, left click on the album to enter it and view its contents. You will be presented with the following screen where all tracks contained within the album are displayed. This time hover over an individual track and a circle will appear on the right of the track name as shown by the red arrow below. Left click the circle to insert a tick and select the track. Once you have selected a song or multiple songs you can now either add them to an existing playlist or create a new one. To do this left click on the “Add to Playlist” button found at the top right hand side of the screen as shown. If you hover over the top right icons an info box appears to tell you what they are. You will now see the first part of the Plex playlist editor; Select a Playlist. If you already have Plex playlists on your system you will be able to choose one from this screen and add in your new selected tracks. If you do not have any playlists on your Plex Media Server or you want to create a new one enter a name for your playlist in the box as shown and click the Add button. The final part of our “How to Make a Playlist on Plex” guide is to discuss the Plex playlist location once they are created. When you hit the Add button mentioned above your new Plex playlist will be created and ready for use. To find the Plex playlist location on your media server select Playlists from the main left hand menu. It is shown below highlighted in yellow. This is the Plex playlist editor screen and will show all playlists on this server. In our case we only have the single playlist that we have just created called Workout Songs. When you click on a playlist you will see the following screen. Here you will see your playlist name, a list of the tracks that you have added and their durations. You can click on any track to play it on your Plex media server. All playlists on your media sever will be fully accessible on any of your Plex receiving client devices.
