With the Kodi team issuing new releases of their media centre product every year or so it doesn’t take long before your system is out of date. Building any HTPC media centre system takes time and dedication and we are often dubious about performing large updates. When you upgrade Kodi media centre it is important that you do not lose your media libraries, addons and skins. In this guide we will show you how to upgrade Kodi without losing any of your data. We will upgrade Kodi to Krypton as at the time of writing this is the latest available build. You can use this method on different versions of Kodi. The process is extremely simple but there are a number of considerations to make. The post includes a full video tutorial.
How to Upgrade Kodi Media Centre without Losing your Data
In our example we will upgrade kodi to Krypton as that is the lastest availble version (at time of writing). Before you do any major upgrades to your HTPC system it is important that you take a backup. This way if the update fails or it does not provide the results you expected you can quickly roll your system back to the way it was pre-upgrade. A full video tutorial is available later in the post. Download the Latest Version of Kodi
If you are installing Kodi for the first time see our Kodi Installation guide. To upgrade Kodi to the latest version download the latest Windows release build from http://www.kodi.tv/download as shown in the image below:
Upgrade Kodi to the Latest Version
Run the installation file you have just downloaded. The first screen called “Welcome to the Kodi Setup Wizard” is there to introduce you to the setup process.
Click Next. The second screen contains the Kodi license agreement. Read through its contents and

The next screen you will see asks you to choose the components to include as part of your Kodi upgrade package. Unless there is somthing specific that you do not require I suggest that you leave all items ticked and
Overwrite your Existing Kodi Folder
Next you are asked to specify the upgrade path to use for this Kodi installation. If you are upgrading Kodi
click Browse and navigate to the installation folder of your old version of Kodi. This is important as it is this step which tells Kodi that you already have a version on your system. When the path has been entered

If the previous stage was done correctly you will now receive a popup notification saying that a previous version of Kodi has been detected and do you want to overwrite it?

The final stage of the Kodi upgrade GUI asks you to specify any start menu items that you want to create for Kodi. You can leave these as default or add an entry of your choosing. When you have set these
click Install. When you hit the
Install button the kodi upgrade process will begin and Kodi will start to replace your existing application files and folders with the new versions. Once the Kodi upgrade process is complete the final screen you will see is called “Completing the Kodi Setup Wizard”. Here
tick the run box and

Migrating your Kodi Data to the New Version – Upgrade Kodi to Krypton
When your new version of Kodi is started for the first time it may take a while before you hit the main Kodi dashboard. Depending on the version of Kodi you have installed you should see a message at the bottom of your screen saying something like: Add-on migration in progress – please wait… [Read: How to Play Blu-ray Movie Discs with Kodi]
At this point the intallation process is checking all of the Kodi Addons you have installed to ensure compatibility with your new version. It will also change any settings within these Kodi Addons to optimise them for your new setup.
Once Kodi returns to the home screen you will see addon update notifications. The upgrade kodi to Krypton process is now complete. You can enjoy Kodi 17 Krypton without losing your data.
