We have already looked at the PS3 Emulator RPCS3 but it is now time for the XBOX 360. There are now some great things happening with the XBOX 360 emulator known as Xenia Project and the application is now running commercial games. Xenia Project is an XBOX 360 emulator for PC. The XBOX 360 Emulator for PC

Xenia Project is an open source XBOX 360 emulator for Windows. There are multiple contributors working on this project and the team uses GitHub to manage the source code and releases. It was started by BenVanik who had previously been on the emulator scene producing the PlayStation Portable emulator PSPPlayer. The project has been around since 2013 but in the last 12 months it has certainly come to life. According to GitHub there are now 36 contributors working on this emulator and commercial games are starting to play. A quick search on YouTube and you can see the emulator in action.

Xenia XBOX 360 Emulator for Windows Requirements

It is difficult to know what the final requirements will be for this XBOX 360 emulator for Windows. As it stands the emulator will play a number of commercial games but at very low frame rates. There are also many glitches on the working games and the crashes are frequent. When producing any system emulator that accuracy is the most important thing. Sspeed optimisations will come once a high level of accuracy is achieved. This is something that the Xenia team states. As it stands however the team recommends the following system requirements:

  • A Windows 8.1 or higher operating system
  • A CPU with either Intel Sandy Bridge or Haswell architecture
  • A graphics card with Open GL 4.5 support
  • An XInput compatible game controller

We recommend the XBOX 360 Wireless Controller with the XBOX 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver to control your system emulators.

Xenia Project Screen Shots

Below are a series of screen shots taken of the Xenia Project XBOX 360 emulator for windows running various commercial game ISOs.

The below screenshot shows the Xenia Project GUI. At this stage it is very simple and geared towards the developer rather than your average user. Most of the menu items relate to CPU settings rather than things a user would need. I expect that the menu system will be developed for the user once the emulator is in a more complete state.
