Over the last year or so there has been huge developments in system emulators for the previous generation of games consoles. This includes the PS3, XBOX 360 and the Wii. Wii emulation has lead the way with games more than playable on the PC but the other two consoles have had some catching up to do. We have already looked at the PS3 Emulator RPCS3 but it is now time for the XBOX 360. There are now some great things happening with the XBOX 360 emulator known as Xenia Project and the application is now running commercial games. Xenia Project is an XBOX 360 emulator for PC. It is still has some way to go but is showing some great promise. In this article we will review Xenia Project in its current state and we will look at what this XBOX 360 emulator for Windows will offer in the future.

Xenia Project is an open source XBOX 360 emulator for Windows. There are multiple contributors working on this project and the team uses GitHub to manage the source code and releases. It was started by BenVanik who had previously been on the emulator scene producing the PlayStation Portable emulator PSPPlayer. The project has been around since 2013 but in the last 12 months it has certainly come to life. According to GitHub there are now 36 contributors working on this emulator and commercial games are starting to play. A quick search on YouTube and you can see the emulator in action.

Xenia XBOX 360 Emulator for Windows Requirements
It is difficult to know what the final requirements will be for this XBOX 360 emulator for Windows. As it stands the emulator will play a number of commercial games but at very low frame rates. There are also many glitches on the working games and the crashes are frequent. When producing any system emulator that accuracy is the most important thing. Sspeed optimisations will come once a high level of accuracy is achieved. This is something that the Xenia team states. As it stands however the team recommends the following system requirements:
- A Windows 8.1 or higher operating system
- A CPU with either Intel Sandy Bridge or Haswell architecture
- A graphics card with Open GL 4.5 support
- An XInput compatible game controller

Xenia Project Xbox 360 Emulator for PC Compatibility List
The Xenia Project XBOX 360 emulator for Windows is still in a development phase but already the list of commercial games that will run on it is growing. The Xenia Project team are keeping a list of XBOX 360 games and details on how they run on the application. The bulk of XBOX 360 games will launch but not get much further but already titles such as Red Dead Redemption, Sonic the Hedgehog and Grand Theft Auto 4 will get as far as gameplay. Xenia Project Download
The Xenia Project download page can be found using the link at the very bottom of this post. If you visit their site you can pick up the source code for the emulator for each of their releases. Please note that in order for you to use these you need a little programming knowledge as these files need compiling. The below screenshot shows the Xenia Project GUI. At this stage it is very simple and geared towards the developer rather than your average user. Most of the menu items relate to CPU settings rather than things a user would need. I expect that the menu system will be developed for the user once the emulator is in a more complete state.

The Future of the Project
On the Xenia Project Roadmap page the team lists some of the things that they would like to do with the emulator. These items may or may not happen and we will have to wait and see!
Cross Platform Support – The emulator on other systems. Possible operating systems include Linux and OS X.
XBOX Live Connectivity – Connectivity to a simulated version of XBOX live allowing users to play online games.
Game Servers – For peer-to-peer gaming. The ability to connect two emulator users together for multiplayer gaming.
Original XBOX Backward Compatibility – The ability to play original XBOX games on the same XBOX 360 emulator.

The Xenia Project XBOX 360 emulator for Windows is a fantastic piece of work and thanks to them it is only a matter of time before we are playing XBOX 360 classics on our PCs and HTPC media centres. For this emulator we are going to have to be patient as it may be 12 months or so before the application can be used for serious gaming.
